TAYLOR, Texas – At a special called City Council Meeting on Monday, March 23, Taylor City Council members voted unanimously to continue the Disaster Declaration signed on March 16, 2020, and also to take additional action in the City of Taylor in response to recent announcements by Williamson County and the Williamson County and Cities Health District (WCCHD) regarding the rapidly changing situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. These additional measures include the postponement of the May 2, 2020, General and Special Election to the November 3, 2020, uniform election date.

On March 16, 2020, Taylor City Council issued a Disaster Declaration for the City of Taylor, which allows the City to allocate resources, utilize personnel and enact procedures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the City of Taylor. It also allows for state assistance to be requested if local resources and mutual aid are insufficient. Under the local disaster declaration, the County Judge and the Mayor are given the authority to exercise any and all necessary powers set out under the Texas Disaster Act of Texas Government Code Chapter 418. The original declaration was for seven days, and at the meeting on March 23, 2020, City Council voted to extend the declaration to April 22, 2020, with the same provisions included in the original declaration.

On March 18, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott suspended certain provisions of the Texas Election Code. In response at the meeting on March 23, Taylor City Council passed Resolution No. R20-13 postponing the May 2, 2020, General and Special Election for the Taylor City Council at-large member position and proposed charter amendments until November 3, 2020.

The City of Taylor continues to monitor this ongoing and fluid situation closely with the Williamson County and WCCHD. Updates will be sent to the media and posted at taylortx.gov and on social media as they become available.
