The City of Taylor formally opened the newly built Dickey-Givens Community Center with a program and official ribbon cutting ceremony on location on Friday, Sept. 17. The program was attended by County and City elected officials, individuals who worked on the planning and construction of the building, members of the Welfare Workers Club, and key stakeholders in the project. The ribbon-cutting was followed by an open house.

Pastor Bunnie Stark of Allen Chapel AME Church led the invocation and remarks were given by Mayor Brandt Rydell, Mr. Donald R. Hill Sr. (former mayor and operations manager of the Welfare Workers Club), Mrs. Leslie M. Hill (president of the Welfare Workers Club), and Mrs. Lessie Givens (past president of the Welfare Workers Club and past building manager of the Dickey-Givens Community Center). The Taylor Chamber of Commerce led the official ribbon cutting.

“The Dickey-Givens Community Center is a great addition to Taylor. I hope that generations of families will create lasting memories at the new Dickey-Givens Community Center, as they did in the previous building,” Mayor Rydell said.

In November 2019, the City Council approved the bid award to Skyler Design Build and construction began in January 2020. Construction on the building was complete in early 2021. Antonio Naylor of Reliance Architecture served as the architect.

The City would like to recognize the contributions of several individuals and organizations that made construction of the Dickey-Givens Community Center possible including the Welfare Workers Club, Judy Langford and David Legere, Williamson County Community Development Block Grant, Taylor Conservation and Heritage Society, the Meadows Foundation, and Don L. Livingston Foundation.
